POSITION SUMMARY

 

To assist in providing safe transportation of students to and from designated location.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assist Driver and students in operation of lifts for wheelchairs and assisting disabled students.
  • Secures special equipment that may accompany the student.
  • Is alert to any conditions in the loading and unloading area which present a danger to students.
  • Communicates in an appropriate fashion with students, parents and employees.
  • Must be able to routinely lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to perform frequent and repetitive physical labor which includes lifting, bending, flexing, pushing and climbing.
  • Provide safe and comfortable conditions for pupils who ride on LESA buses.
  • Assist pupils as they enter and leave the bus, and will assist in loading and unloading wheel chair pupils.
  • See to it that pupils are seated with seat belts securely fastened before the vehicle is in motion.  If pupils unfasten their belts during the ride, assistants are to assist pupils in refastening seat belts.
  • Observe pupil behavior and take positive action in correcting behavioral problems by using approved techniques.
  • Assist in bus emergency evacuation.
  • Required to wear seat belts when vehicle is in motion.
  • Assist driver when backing maneuvers are necessary.
  • If emergency exists on the bus and help is required, use radio to contact base or, if not successfully, call the office if at all possible.
  • Be at his/her assigned work station ready to perform their assigned duties at the regular (stated) starting time for all bus runs.
  • Clean interior of assigned bus, mop floors, wipe down seats and clean windows as needed.  Complete these tasks during non-pupil supervisory time (waiting for pupils, fueling buses, etc.).
  • Follow all stated rules, procedures and policies.

 

 

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Performs other related tasks as assigned.

EQUIPMENT

  • Uses standard automotive and bus equipment, and telephone.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of all traffic laws, regulations, road signs and related information.
  • Clean the bus.
  • Visual and auditory acuity within professionally determined normal ranges, with correction if needed.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective organizational, problem solving, and time management skills.
  • Ability to learn and comprehend information from procedures manuals and other materials. Ability to comprehend and follow traffic signs required.
  • Ability to physically move through the bus, center and classrooms.
  • Ability to maintain composure and perform responsibilities under pressure and in cases of accidents or other emergencies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS, WORK HAZARDS

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously required to sit and occasionally required to walk or stand.  The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job.  The employee frequently will reach above the head and forward. The employee frequently uses hand strength to grasp equipment or students.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and push or pull up to 90 pounds such as students or students in wheel chairs.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception and peripheral vision.

 

     EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must have High School Diploma or Equivalent

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100° and below 32° and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces.  The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with public and other workers.  The employee has direct responsibility for the safety and well-being of others.

The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.
